Have you ever really thought about the Lord’s Prayer? I’ve been studying it for ethics this week and it has really made me think about what Jesus was teaching to his disciples.
I think that I will explore what each part of the Lord’s prayer means, according to Jesus. It is such a simple prayer, and sometimes we just say it, not thinking about what we are saying. We kind of take it for granted.
When you say, ” Hallowed be thy name”, what are you saying? One definition says to be hallowed means to be regarded as holy, or sacred. In Jesus’ time, to know the name of God meant that you knew God. Jews revered God so much that they did not say His name. God’s name is special. Yet, during Jesus’ lifetime, the Jews were not saying God’s name, but were not living lives that showed that they revered God.
When we say “Hallowed be thy name” we are hoping that the whole world will begin to honor God’s name. When we say this, we should realize that the world is in a bad place, that people are not worshipping the true Yahweh God. When we say this, in our hearts, we should be able to look at ourselves, look at our lives and see how we are honoring God’s name.. When we say this, if we are not worshipping God with our lives, it allows us to line back up with God and get it straight…one more time…
God, your name is Holy…your name is above all names. God forgive me for all the things that I have done that doesn’t give honor to your name. Help me to realize the things in my life that are not like you. God, I pray that your name will be hallowed over all the earth. God, I pray that you will be lifted up above all other names in all the earth. God you are awesome and I give my life over to you oh, God, for there is none like you… In the name of Jesus, your precious son’s name I pray… So be it…
